Make New Friends With Book Inventory Software

By Maxim Smirnov

If this article about book inventory software were an infomercial, you'd be watching someone with a lovely accent explain how the right software will clean your house, wash your car, and help you win friends and influence people! Since this isn't an infomercial, though, let's be honest--you'll probably need to do those dishes yourself. But you might not be aware that the right book inventory software really can help you connect with other book lovers and make some new friends with similar interests.

Export Your Book Inventory

You've used great book inventory software that doesn't just list your books but fills in detailed information and lets you add custom fields, sort the books how you want and categorize to your heart's desire. Now you can export your book inventory to HTML. If that sounds far too complicated for you, don't worry. All that means is that with a few clicks the book inventory software turns your inventory into a web page!

Then it's easy enough to grab some free web space and upload that file (most free web hosts make this easy with a button you click, then you find the file on your computer and up it goes-no technical knowledge necessary). Then you can put the URL (or address) of your file in your email signature or send it to friends so they can see the books that you own.

If you interact in forums or message boards you can put that URL in your profile or even your signature if that particular board allows it. Announce that your book inventory is now online. If the forum has anything to do with books or literature, other people will be especially interested in what you're reading. This can spark great conversations about particular books, and even debates between those who disagree about a novel.

Your non-fiction books, as well as your audiobooks and ebooks will be listed as well if you choose the right book inventory software, and will help your visitors see what interests you. If you don't want to upload a webpage, you can email it to people, or export it to a mobile device to send to friends. Any of these methods are a great way to connect with friends (and make new ones) who share your love of books.

Other Book Inventory Software Users

The company that made your software should offer user forums so they can hear what their customers say about their software and can respond quickly to any problems. These forums are a great way to connect with other people who share your interests. Not only do you have a love of books in common, but you chose the same book inventory software!

People in a forum like this love to share their book inventories with other users and talk about the unique ways in which they use the book inventory software. You'll get great book tips and ideas about how you can better use all the great features in your book inventory software.

Do I Have Spyware?

By Jessica Blanck

The best way to tell if you have been infected by spyware is if you have numerous pop-ups, freezes, your computer slows down, you are redirected to other unwanted sites when you do a search, and unwanted changes occur to your computer. Spyware is used by companies to get your internet search history so that potentially successful advertisements can be directed toward you. Some computers have adware and shareware on them before you even buy them.

9 Things to Know About Spyware

1. Spyware can find passwords you use by logging your keystrokes. (bank accounts, e-mails, school information, etc.)

2. Spyware can send emails out to your contacts.

3. Hackers can use spyware to obtain your personal information.

4. Spyware can watch your online purchases and steal your credit card information.

5. Spyware can make changes to your desktop and other files causing it to slow down or even crash.

6. Spyware can download files in the background where you don't even notice it.

7. Spyware can prevent you from using programs on your computer or even delete these programs.

8. Spyware can create shortcuts for your files to the internet allowing hackers to get a hold of your personal files easier.

9. Some spywares are programmed to infect your computer immediately after a free program removes it. Another reason why it is important to obtain active protection.

It is necessary to remove spyware as fast as possible when detected. Purchasing a reputable anti-spyware program will give you the protection you need to block spyware, detect it, and remove it.

Laws to regulate spyware are still being developed and may take time to be enforced. Until then, protect yourself and compare different programs to find the best one for you.

Creating Your Own Functions in Excel

By Dinesh Takyar

Writing custom functions in Excel is easy and important because everybody needs to perform a calculation specific to their situation every now and then. Some companies may offer a special bonus to their employees while some other companies may offer more travel allowance or Christmas benefits. Using the standard available functions in Microsoft Excel may not provide the solution. The solution to the problem lies in creating your own function.

Custom functions, like macros, use the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language. They differ from macros in two significant ways. First, they use function procedures instead of sub procedures. They start with a Function statement instead of a Sub statement and end with End Function instead of End Sub. Second, they perform calculations instead of taking actions.

A custom function is more flexible because none of the actual raw data is hard-coded into the function; the user just types the data for the calculation instead of the actual calculation. Let's see a function in action.

To create this custom function, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Excel.

2. Click on 'Tools' in the menu bar, select Macro and click finally on 'Visual Basic Editor' or just press 'Alt+F11' to start the Visual Basic Editor

3. On the Insert menu, click Module.

4. Type the following code in the new module:

Function paypackage(salary)

'House Rent Allowance (HRA)

'HRA=60% of basic salary

'Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)

'LTA=8.33% of basic salary

paypackage = salary + salary * 0.6 + salary * 0.0833

End Function

To use the custom function, follow these steps:

1. Type the following values in your worksheet:

Cell Value

--------------

A3 7000.00

B3 =paypackage(A3)

The value in cell A3 represents the basic salary of the employee.

This function automatically calculates the paypackage of an employee based on the basic salary and the result 11783.1 appears immediately.

Similar interesting functions can be created to calculate compound interest using:

Function Compound_Interest(PV As Double, R As Double, N As Double) As Double

Compound_Interest = PV*(1+R)^N 'Performs computation

End Function

In the function above PV is the present value, R is the interest rate, and N is the number of investment periods.

Take care!

Registry Utilities Review - CyberDefender Registry Cleaner

By Amene Katanda

The latest born from the PC security firm CyberDefender, the registry repair utility CyberDefender Registry Cleaner(TM) is one of the newest repair tools to help your PC run at top performance.

What you may need CyberDefender Registry Cleaner

The average computer user will install and uninstall hundreds of applications during a PC lifetime. During the process a huge amount of junk will remain in the computer registry (specifically because most installation/ uninstallations do not remove registry entries which are left behind and end up cluttering the registry).

Another source of registry clutter is the extensive use of internet social networking sites like facebook. Most people are unaware of the amount of registry entries that each session on these virtual spaces make on their PC. It is only when errors crop up or the PC runs slower that computer users become aware of the problem.

Cleaning up your registry should be a routine activity.

Most computer experts recommend running a registry utility to fix registry issues in order to keep your computer running at its best performance.

Cyber defender's new robust Registry Cleaner easily fixes the registry and restores the speed and performance of your PC, fixes system errors and crashes, backs up the entire registry and clears duplicate and junk files.

Why you would want to stay away from CyberDefender Registry Cleaner

This is yet another utility in a market that is fast getting overcrowded.

CyberDefender Registry Cleaner is a relatively new software which has not been tested in the market, and whose weaknesses may still be unknown. Like most third party cleaners, the risk of deletion of vital registry elements, especially DLL entries in something not to ignore.

How to Back Up Your XP Registry

By Amene Katanda

If your operating system is not operating as well as it used to be, it's possible that you are considering cleaning up its registry. There are hundreds of excellent tools available for download. In most cases, these have proved to be very valuable tools to solve common registry problems such as slow computer and blue screen of death freezes.

However even the best registry cleaners have limitations and added that they are generally third party utilities, it's always a possibility that they get confused during the clean-up process and remove vital registry entries. One such type of objects that registry repair tools often remove is DLL entries.

DLL objects are typically shared between two or more applications. Removing them is a common cause of instability. For that reason, and for the general sensitivity of the registry area, before making any change to your registry, it is advised you make a backup, so that you can revert to it in case anything goes wrong.

Here is a simple step by step guide to back-up XP registry.

-Go to Command Prompt (that is DOS)

-Type in regedit

-When the registry opens - Click on 'File Export'

-When prompted pick a folder (can call it temp or backup)

-Put in the file name and it will put in the .reg extension.

To restore a registry, just go to your backup registry folder and double click the registry you saved and it will overwrite the corrupted registry. Another easy way is to create restore points. This allows you, in case a registry object is deleted or corrupt to revert to the old registry entries.

How to Get Rid of Trojan Virus - What You Really Need to Know About Trojan Removal

By Alexander Storm

If the following activities take place on your PC, your system is likely infected with a Trojan Virus:

- pop ups come up on their own

- you get redirected by itself to commercial sites using your internet browser

- your browser-homepage changes with every start

- your system runs slower than before

- suddenly your internet browser doesn't work

- other programs installed on your system don't work

A Trojan Virus is malware that can allow hackers to get access to your passwords and credit card information. The program itself appears to perform a desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious functions. The well-known example is a program named "waterfalls.scr", which claims to be a waterfall screensaver (and is actually a Trojan horse).

A Trojan Virus can do even worse damage than the things mentioned before as it can:

- erase or overwrite data on your computer

- shut off your computer randomly

- upload and download files

- encrypt and corrupt files

- allow remote access to your computer

- spread other viruses

- log keystrokes

- install a backdoor

- deactivate antivirus programs and even

- re-install itself after being disabled

In fact, some viruses are even designed to reinstall themselves after they have been detected and removed! That's one of the reasons why it's not that easy to remove a Trojan Horse.

All of this sounds pretty disturbing - and it is, you have to take action immediately if your system is infected and get rid of a Trojan Virus fast. But how to get rid of a Trojan virus?

First of all, run a computer scan if you already have an antivirus program on your system. If not I can recommend NoAdware as it was the only antivirus program that helped me to detect and remove Vundo and Conhook - both Trojan Horses.

Like so many people the first thing I did back in the day when I noticed the some of the symptoms on my PC mentioned above was downloading one free antivirus program after another. It looked like a Trojan was involved and I wanted to remove the Trojan Horse fast.

But none of the free antivirus programs could detect the Trojans on my system - except NoAdware. Maybe it has something to do with my system, but this program was able to find and remove the mentioned Trojans and even more infections.

To be sure that the Trojan Horse cannot communicate through the internet you can cut your internet connection for a while. The catch is that your antivirus program needs to be up-to-date.

If you can't update your computer or even connect to the internet, use a friend's or other computer with an internet connection to download NoAdware or other antivirus program to a disk or USB flash drive. If your computer is unusable, but you have another hard-drive on hand, hook up the damaged hard-drive as a slave drive.

Alternatively, if you know the name of the Trojan horse, you can go online and post your problem in forums. But it will take a lot of time and you are taking a big risk going online while your system is infected. Nowadays, there are Trojan Horses like Poison-Ivy that can even bypass the firewall on your PC.

Shareware is a marketing method for computer software in which the software can be obtained by a user, often by downloading from the Internet or on magazine cover-disks free of charge to try out a program before buying the full version of that program. If the "tryout" program is already the full version, it is available for a short amount of time, or it does not have updates, help, and other extras that buying the added programs has. Shareware has also been known as "try before you buy". A shareware program is accompanied by a request for payment, and the software's distribution license often requires such a payment.

Freeware is computer software that is available for use at no cost or for an optional fee.[1] Freeware is often made available in a binary-only, proprietary form, thus making it distinct from free software. Proprietary freeware allows authors to contribute something for the benefit of the community, while at the same time allowing them to retain control of the source code and preserve its business potential. Freeware is different from shareware, where the user is obligated to pay (e.g. after some trial period or for additional functionality).
