Creating Your Own Functions in Excel

Writing custom functions in Excel is easy and important because everybody needs to perform a calculation specific to their situation every now and then. Some companies may offer a special bonus to their employees while some other companies may offer more travel allowance or Christmas benefits. Using the standard available functions in Microsoft Excel may not provide the solution. The solution to the problem lies in creating your own function.

Custom functions, like macros, use the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language. They differ from macros in two significant ways. First, they use function procedures instead of sub procedures. They start with a Function statement instead of a Sub statement and end with End Function instead of End Sub. Second, they perform calculations instead of taking actions.

A custom function is more flexible because none of the actual raw data is hard-coded into the function; the user just types the data for the calculation instead of the actual calculation. Let's see a function in action.

To create this custom function, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Excel.

2. Click on 'Tools' in the menu bar, select Macro and click finally on 'Visual Basic Editor' or just press 'Alt+F11' to start the Visual Basic Editor

3. On the Insert menu, click Module.

4. Type the following code in the new module:

Function paypackage(salary)

'House Rent Allowance (HRA)

'HRA=60% of basic salary

'Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)

'LTA=8.33% of basic salary

paypackage = salary + salary * 0.6 + salary * 0.0833

End Function

To use the custom function, follow these steps:

1. Type the following values in your worksheet:

The value in cell A3 represents the basic salary of the employee.

This function automatically calculates the paypackage of an employee based on the basic salary and the result 11783.1 appears immediately.

Similar interesting functions can be created to calculate compound interest using:

Function Compound_Interest(PV As Double, R As Double, N As Double) As Double

Compound_Interest = PV*(1+R)^N 'Performs computation

End Function

In the function above PV is the present value, R is the interest rate, and N is the number of investment periods.

If the following activities take place on your PC, your system is likely infected with a Trojan Virus:

- pop ups come up on their own

A Trojan Virus is malware that can allow hackers to get access to your passwords and credit card information. - encrypt and corrupt files

- install a backdoor

In fact, some viruses are even designed to reinstall themselves after they have been detected and removed! That's one of the reasons why it's not that easy to remove a Trojan Horse.

All of this sounds pretty disturbing - and it is, you have to take action immediately if your system is infected and get rid of a Trojan Virus fast. But how to get rid of a Trojan virus?

First of all, run a computer scan if you already have an antivirus program on your system. If not I can recommend NoAdware as it was the only antivirus program that helped me to detect and remove Vundo and Conhook - both Trojan Horses.

Like so many people the first thing I did back in the day when I noticed the some of the symptoms on my PC mentioned above was downloading one free antivirus program after another. It looked like a Trojan was involved and I wanted to remove the Trojan Horse fast.

But none of the free antivirus programs could detect the Trojans on my system - except NoAdware. Maybe it has something to do with my system, but this program was able to find and remove the mentioned Trojans and even more infections.

To be sure that the Trojan Horse cannot communicate through the internet you can cut your internet connection for a while. The catch is that your antivirus program needs to be up-to-date.

If you can't update your computer or even connect to the internet, use a friend's or other computer with an internet connection to download NoAdware or other antivirus program to a disk or USB flash drive. If your computer is unusable, but you have another hard-drive on hand, hook up the damaged hard-drive as a slave drive.

Alternatively, if you know the name of the Trojan horse, you can go online and post your problem in forums. But it will take a lot of time and you are taking a big risk going online while your system is infected. Nowadays, there are Trojan Horses like Poison-Ivy that can even bypass the firewall on your PC.

The Evolution of Document Composition Software

Document creation software has been evolving since the 1970's. Originally document creation or composition software was essentially a piece of code that sat upon a mainframe and attached to transactional business applications on the mainframe.

The documents that these systems produced were functional, that is probably all you can say about them. Developing document creation applications within these systems was time consuming and demanded an awful lot of code. However what may surprise you is the number of applications out there still running on these systems!

During the 1980's, we started to see an advance in the document creation arena. Systems became easier to work with and the notion of bringing some variable data in for select marketing messages began to appear. The advent of the PC began to bring software tools in the document management arena. Notably, imaging and work flow and letter creation tools.

However compared to today, computing power was still relatively low, Windows had not really emerged as a dominant operating system and the tools that companies were using to generate documents remained fairly rigid and certainly demanded a heavy skill set to create new document creation applications.

With these tools, the process of getting a new document to market was long and fairly arduous requiring much IT input and much liaison and dialogue between the business and IT. Thus once an application was built, it was likely to remain fairly static.

Then came the 1990's. Windows was in ascendancy and the concept of GUI (Graphical User Interface) tools began to emerge. WYSIWIG (What you see is what you get) began to make an entrance into the field of document creation and composition. Now, users of moderate skill and IT literacy could begin to take some control over the look and feel of the documents.

A large portion of the scripting has now been removed from the document application development process. The scripting that was required now was related to document business rules - what salutation to use, if variable x on the document equals y then show this wording etc.

Whilst this advance was significant, we certainly couldn't call the document creation process dynamic. There is still a lot of need for IT Project Management discipline and a document could not simply be turned around in a day. Thus, customer communications management projects remained fairly un-dynamic and a sudden change in market conditions might induce a delayed reaction in customer communications documents.

What did begin to emerge towards the end of the 1990's was the advent of business user messaging software. Now, a user in marketing could add a marketing message hours before a statement run was due to be produced and that message would hit customer letter boxes the next morning.

From 2000 on, things really began to take off. More and more control was pushed in the users direction. The ability to drive communications to customers became a task of the business. Convergence of other document management tools such as archival and retrieval tools meant that the business of creating documents was moving from being a service function to an active, live and dynamic value provider.

Customer service functions began to notice benefits. Higher quality documents mean fewer calls into the call centre. The ability to view customer documents online through web browsers meant that customers were served more effectively and quickly. Call centre productivity was rising.

In the last 5 years, the push to be able to communicate via any channel with relevant content has grown significantly. Today, document creation is the means that a company communicates with its customers, prospects and suppliers.

The ability to deliver documents as paper, email, sms, web, to social media, using XML documents to interface with suppliers efficiently, to be able to communicate customers on a one to one basis means that document creation starts involves advanced data management, marketing process and input, sophisticated distribution and technology exploitation.

Today, Document Creation drives sales, improves company efficiency, increases customer loyalty, share of wallet and numerous other key performance indicators. A lot of changes made the term "Spyware" to mean what it is meant today.

It goes back to a story when a man, Mr. Steve Gibson, one day discovered a few advertizing software which were installed in his machine without any trace of his consent or knowledge. He claimed these programs to get hold of his private information from the system without the user's consent. In the course of time he took back his claim; however insisted that no company should secretly have software programs installed in anyone's computer.

Eventually, Gibson introduced the first software against Spyware. It was called the OptOut. Ever since, many companies followed the suite and are still offering varied types of anti-Spyware programs.

Spyware Programs are of different nature. Important ones are given below.

When you browse the internet, there are websites which open up suddenly displaying several products up on the screen. They could undoubtedly annoy anyone for that matter. 3) Dialers

Excel is probably the most popular spreadsheet in use today, and certainly a mainstay of investment banks, private equity firms and hedge funds. It offers a tremendous amount of flexibility to develop a wide array of financial computations, ranging from simple, static calculations to complex, dynamic analysis. In order to effectively develop financial models for use in valuation analyses or forecasting, it is important to understand how companies show their information. This article is an overview of the link between the basic components of a full financial spreadsheet: income statement, balance sheet and cash flow. Because these financial statements are based on accounting rules, there will be some accounting theory used in this article but only very high level, basic elements to allow the reader to follow along.

The Income Statement

The income statement includes items that give an indication of how much a company sells (called revenue, sales or net sales) and what it costs to run the business (cost of sales, operating expenses, taxes). If you took sales and subtracted all of the expenses, what is left is the net income of a company. An example income statement will look like the following:

Net Sales

- Cost of Sales

= Gross Profit

- Operating Expenses

= Operating Profit

- Interest Expense

+ Interest Income

+/- Other Expense/Income

= Pretax Income

- Income Taxes

= Net Income

Net sales represents what a company has sold, whether a physical product (box, toy, car, etc.) or a service. The cost of sales represents what expenses a company incurred to provide the physical product or service. For example, if a company sold $100 worth of shoes and the machine usage to make those shoes was $40, than $40 is your cost of sales, and thus, the gross profit is $60. In general, a manufacturing business has costs related to the running of machinery to make a product plus a depreciation value associated with the economic wear and tear, which is usually included in cost of sales.

Operating expenses relate to items including the administrative parts of running a business, including payroll, rent or lease payments, advertising and marketing, depreciation and amortization on office fixtures and other general and administrative items. This category is usually reserved for the non-activity aspects of business. Some companies, like pharmaceutical or electronics entities, will also have research and development expenses, and these are normally listed under this section of the income statement. After summing all of these expenses and subtracting from gross profit, you are left with operating income (or operating loss).

Operating income is an important figure in business because that is what a company generates before any financing decisions are taken into account. This number is also referred to as EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes), and when you add back all depreciation, amortization and other "non-cash" charges, you arrive at EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization). EBITDA is and important calculation in the financial analysis world because it represents the cash income earned for running a business. This is the figure used in many industries to determine valuation, as well as how much debt a company can handle.

After operating income, you will include items involved in the financing of a company, like interest expense for a company who has debt. In addition, you would include interest earned from excess cash balances or short-term and long-term investments. If the company is a financial institution, this interest expense and interest income lines are actually part of revenue and cost of revenue, so you would see that information near the top, but for most other industries, it constitutes a place below operating income. Finally, if there are any other non-operating sources of income, like gains on sales of assets, it would be included in this area, too. The sum of all of these entries is normally called "Other Expenses, Net."

Once the other expenses are subtracted from operating income, a company has pretax income, or income before income tax provision. This is the accounting figure used to determine how much tax an entity is required to pay to the government. Normally, companies pay around a 35% federal income tax, and they may have to pay a state and local tax amount based on specific tax rules. There are also other items that impact how much tax must be paid, including any operating losses from a prior year, tax credits used to offset taxable income, and certain accounting methods that can increase or decrease the amounts owed during a particular time period. Once the total tax is determined, the net income can then be calculated.

Without getting too much into accounting methods and tax law, the net income number is merely the result of accounting methodologies and does not necessarily reflect the cash generation of the firm. As stated earlier, EBITDA is a better metric of a company's ability to generate cash. As will be discussed later, there are certain items to be deducted from EBITDA to determine true free cash flow, but for now, just note that cash generation and accounting regulations create a different set of results. It is important to keep that in mind when you develop your financial models because understanding the components of the income statement is the first step in putting it all together.

Your windows registry settings are in a file on your computer stored in the operating systems registry. The very first thing to do before you make any changes is to make a back up registry in case something does go wrong and to understand how to install it or to have someone who does. The first method is to make back ups or individual values, which are very easy to restore. These back ups also make notes of the changes up have made. And here are the steps:

1. Rename the original value to something like Initials_ Name, where Initials is your initials, and Name is the value's original name.

2. Add a date if you think you're going to change the value often.

3. Add a new value using the original name and type but with new data. You're all set to change the value and if you don't like the result, you can restore the original value with little effort.

The other method, or method two, is to export the part of the registry that you are working on to a REG file. Import the REG file if you need to restore the original settings.

The third method is to export the files to a hive file. Here are the steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and click OK.

2. On the File menu, click Export.

3. In the Save as type list, click Registry Hive Files.

4. Type the name of the new hive file, and then click Save.

The cell address specifies the Excel column number and the row number. For example a cell address 'A1' specifies column 'A' and row '1'. A Microsoft Excel 2003 worksheet has 256 columns and 65536 rows (256x256). You can enter text, numbers including dates and formulas in the cells. The data in the cells can be formatted using standard procedures. Using the values at the cell addresses you can perform calculations. For example, if the value at cell address 'A1' is 25 and the value at cell address 'B1' is 4, then if you write the formula '=A1*B1' at cell address C1, the resultant value at cell address C1 will display '100'. Now assume for a moment you made a mistake. You wanted to actually enter '35' in cell 'A1'.

Click on Excel cell 'A1', enter '35' and check the result in cell 'C1'. The value at cell address C1 has automatically been updated to '140'! You can access values at addresses in other Excel sheets also and perform the required calculations. This is what makes Microsoft Excel so powerful.

For Logic to communicate with external MIDI devices, first you will to configure the Audio MIDI Setup. The Audio MIDI setup is an application located within the Utilities folder (in Applications folder). You can quickly access it in the Apple menu bar: Go >Utilities (or press Command Shift U).

Once in the Utilities folder, open the Application Audio MIDI Setup, and click on the MIDI Devices button. You should see an IAC driver button, a network button and buttons for other MIDI devices connected to your computer. In 1979 SAP released SAP R/2 into the German market; it was an instant success! Every large German company had a SAP software and for years this company stayed within Germany's boundaries. SAP released R/3 and in 1988 it was publicized in the North America region which resulted in an outstanding successful business venture. Although this is not a very simple subject to write about, I feel that over the years I have learned some valuable tips that all my readers can benefit from. In the world of Anti-Virus software, people are mainly concerned that their program will stop virus's from infecting their computer. I understand that this is a serious concern for most people, however there are some other factors that make up a very solid anti-virus program, and I will touch on several of them through this article.

My Anti-Virus of Choice

My answer to my customers when the pose the question about what anti-virus software to purchase is typically as follows; "buy the same one I use". When i give this answer it usually fills people with a sense of comfort to know that a professional technician has a brand name of choice. Anti Virus programs specialize in blocking worms, trojans and other virus's from infecting your computer. What they do not effectively block is spyware and adware which create pop ups on your computer. Although advertisement software on your computer is not harmful, sometimes they seem like windows messages that you should click on, and when you click on them they bring you to harmful sites in which case then you get infected.

In addition to Norton Anti Virus, I have been very impressed with a product called Webroot Spysweeper. This program is designed to clean and block the exact adware and spyware that I mentioned above. There's nothing more frustrating than logging in to do a "quick" email check, and having your computer take forever to launch a mail application or web browser. Maybe you've already added memory and were still annoyed when applications move at molasses speed. It could be that unnecessary or unwanted files in your system registry are causing your computer to run slow. Editing or cleaning your system registry could help restore some of the faster performance you've been craving.

What is the System Registry?

The system registry on a Windows computer is sort of like a master file that contains files and programs that run other files and programs. Lots of debris can get stranded there: Internet tidbits, fragments of code from old programs that didn't get uninstalled perfectly, obsolete files, and even viruses and spyware. Obviously, anything that's taking up space in this "master file" location can create problems for the efficient operation of "good" files and make your computer run slow. For that reason, it's a good idea to periodically edit or clean your system registry files. It can also help a bit if your computer is running slow.

SAP Business One - Crystal Reports Design Overview For Consultant

If you have SAP B1 ERP implemented in your organization, you are probably already familiar with internal reports, queries, XL Reporter and in this small publication we would like to give highlights on Crystal Reports. Each reporting tool has its own pluses and drawbacks, and you should try multiple tools, if your reporting needs are broad: from Financial reporting (Trial Balance, Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss, Cash Flow Statement) to Operation reporting (Sales by Regions and Items, Sales Commission Report, Project Profitability to name a few examples), plus if you need industry forms, such as Bill of Ladings, Agent Settlement Report:

1. XL Reporter. This reporting tool is very end user friendly and if you are accountant, who is neither comfortable nor familiar with SQL scripting, this report should fit your needs. This report is deploys Microsoft Excel tools and it has VBA extension to MS Excel. However this reports design tool works with predefined SB1 objects: Business Partner, Account, Item, Price List and similar, and you are limited in building custom links. And this is understandable - if you need advanced links in your report, you will need SQL view or Stored procedure as the report base - you can achieve this goal in Crystal Report.

2. Crystal Reports. If you are discovering Crystal Reports design through report building wizard, then you should listen SAP BO training class either online or face-to-face. However if you are report developer and work in IT department, then you should go to SQL view or stored procedure scripting. Stored procedure is the most powerful tool and its parameters should be translated to Crystal Report parameter. Stored Procedure allows you to build temporary tables within its boundaries - this should resolve complex unionizing and build staging tables if required. Stored procedure should be able to build very complex report - try to design something like Sales project profitability, based on incurred cost in Purchase Order Processing, Production (working hours and possible overhead).

3. SQL Server Reporting Services or SRS. This tool is web based, which should give you certain advantages if your organization has regional offices and international presence. SRS in its suitability is pretty similar to Crystal Reports and it bases its reports on SQL Views or SQL Stored Procedures.

4. Industry Forms. If you are thinking which reporting tool to deploy and how, the hint is simple - these reports should depict only one document: Sales Invoice, Purchase Order, Vendor Invoice in the format, required by your industry regulation. You can use Crystal Report (which could be integrated in your SAP B1 interface) as well as SRS (if you want to enable these reporting over the web).

What is spam?

Spamming is a term often used to describe the abuse of email systems. It is the bulk sending of unsolicited emails. The term is also used for instant messaging spam as well as all the other forms of unsolicited electronic communications.

Where does spam come from?

For many years, eastern countries were the usual suspects, as far as the origin of spam is concerned. But according to recent researches, the United States are the sole biggest source of mail spam, accounting for about 30% of all spam!

Kaspersky is most likely the least known Windows antivirus of this group but, is head and shoulders above the rest. Even though you may not know the name, this is the best antivirus on the market. In detection tests Kaspersky consistently scored higher than both of the other programs shown here. This software also is extremely light on system resource use. Like the other two it is updated daily via subscription. In my opinion this is definitely the best of the group and I would recommend it to everyone.

In conclusion, all of these Windows antivirus software packages are great products. Each would provide sufficient protection for any computer. With these products installed, your risk of getting a virus is very slight but, does still exist. For that reason alone I would opt for Kaspersky because of its stellar performance in detection tests. This gives you a much better chance of finding and removing a virus if you ever do get one

In our basic computer training lesson today, we'll start our lesson with this question: "What Is Software"?, and what is CPU? So many people who want to learn how to use computer properly on their own, don't even know what they are and how they operate. Not to talk of computer basics classes, that fails to educate their students on the very basics of a computer. In this article, we will be covering these two topics. After reading this article today, you won't be asking the same question again "what is a Software"?

Computer software programs enable computers to perform specific tasks. It is removable and is differentiated from the physical components of the computer system which is called hardware. Application software allows a user to do something specific as in a word processing software program. System software allows the computer to run application software by interfacing with hardware and other software made to user specifications. I hope that answers our first question "What IS Software". So let's move on with our basic computer training!. we are now left with the second question " What Is CPU".

There are many different types of software. Of course, the system software is the operating system such as Windows or Linux. Application software can be in the form of games, applications, word processors, spreadsheet programs, and more. It is installed in the RAM and a point and click link is put onto the desktop to allow the user to launch the program easily.

Another type of software is programming software. This is a program that provides tools to users allowing them to write computer programs in a computer language without having to know everything about that language. Programming software will include text editors, interpreters, link generators, and more.

So "What Is CPU"? We've also answered our first question "What Is Software"? so let's move on with the second question, as part of our basic computer training lesson for today.

Do you know that computers work through an interaction of hardware and software? Hardware refers to the parts of a computer that you can see and touch yourself, including the case and everything inside it. The most important piece of hardware is a tiny rectangular chip inside your computer called the central processing unit (CPU), or microprocessor. This is the "brain" of your computer. The part that translates instructions and performs calculations. I hope this now answered our last question "What Is CPU"?.

In computers, software is loaded into the random access memory (RAM) and is executed in the central processing unit (CPU). At its lowest level, software consists of machine language specific to an individual processor. Software is a sequence of instructions that changes to state of the computer's hardware in a particular sequence so that the programs can run properly

A simple example of the way software operates on your PC can be illustrated by what happens when a user selects an entry such as "Copy" from a menu. In this case, a conditional instruction is executed to copy text from data in a document area residing in memory. If a different menu entry such as paste is chosen, the software may execute the instructions to copy the text from the clipboard data area to a specific location in the same or another document in memory.

This brings us to the end of our basic computer training lesson for today! The only limitation on the use of computer software in applications lies in the ingenuity of the designer/programmer. Large areas of activities formerly assumed to be incapable of software simulation are now routinely programmed. Hope I did answered the two questions: what is software and what is CPU? It's not your fault. You wanted to stop pop-ups and downloaded a free pop-up blocker and now have more than ever. You were probably tricked in to downloading a marketing application that eliminated the competition's pop-up software from your PC and then served itself as the sole source of pop-ups. So the fact remains that it IS blocking pop-ups, but only those from other advertising companies. When did you forget that even online, there still is no free lunch?

Search engines cannot possibly know the motives behind the products that search results reveal. Performing a search for Free Spyware Removal will elicit results from both legitimate and malicious software makers and without experience, 99% of the people don't know which is which.

Reading along so far, you may think this is all common sense. Paying for software is not only something that victimized computer users oppose, it's something that malicious application makers oppose. They want a free lunch too! This means that for one purchase that frustrates, confuses or disappoints an honest computer user, that Internet surfer just entered a new, safer level of computer protection that will quietly and securely result in more happiness in the coming year.

Now what happens? You read this information, want to stop pop-ups and inadvertently download a malicious software that pummels you and your family and co-workers with pop-ups from just ONE marketing firm rather than several... It is now officially, finally and rightly, your fault.

Writing Lighting - Fast String Functions in C#

String functions are extensively used in .NET languages such as C#. Writing functions that work efficiently at record speeds is all about technique.

For example, let's picture a situation where you need to get characters from a string one at a time in a FOR loop. There are two possible ways to go about this:

myString.substring(i, 1);

myString[1];

Both get the exact same job done, but the first one does it poorly. Why? The substring function returns a new string, meaning that if you go through each character in the original string, you are going to generate a new string for each character.

The second method returns a character, which is a primitive data type (like an INT, or BOOL). Thus if you are just going through the characters you will not create any additional strings.

So let's break it down into a list:

1. Work with characters. All strings have a ToCharArray() function. This function is your friend, it is a lot more memory efficient to handle everything as characters instead of as strings. Of course, sometimes it'll be stupid to handle operations character-by-character. But sometimes it is stupid to handle operations as strings. The latter of the two is more common and is costly in terms of performance.

2. Avoid Lists if you can. Comparing the speeds of working with basic arrays (fixed length) vs Lists (variable length) there is no competition. If you can use an array of set size DO so. It is immensely faster than doing operations on a list. The exception however is ADDING. Unless you know exactly how many elements are going to be added, Lists will be more effective.

As a quick note, if you do use a List, make sure it's not an ArrayList (unless you're using .NET Framework 1.1 and below), instead use List<> with the correct type.

3. StringBuilder when merging strings. Replace Concat() and + calls when merging strings with a StringBuilder and the appropriate Append() method. But careful, there is some loss in speed from initializing StringBuilder. So only use StringBuilder if you are going to merge strings OFTEN. That is the keyword. Don't use StringBuilder to merge 2 or 3 strings together. Use it when you have a loop that is merging strings hundreds of times.

Now go ahead and go back over any string functions you have written that you still use. Don't underestimate the difference the simple changes can make. We're talking huge speed boosts.
